 | Rebecca Alson-Milkman is committed to presenting provocative dances about current political and social issues in intimate settings in order to promote conversation and change in our familial, local and national communities. She holds a B.A. in Dance and Sociology from Wesleyan University and an M.F.A. in Dance and Choreography from UCLA. Her work is grounded both in the symbiotic relationship between process and product and in her collaborations with other artists, which have included set designers Sheila Alson and Piper Mavis, composers Lucas Kuzma, Derrick Spiva, Jr. and Craig Thomas, filmmaker Jesse Alson-Milkman and principal dancers Meg Batterson, Julie Festa, Rebecca Good, Cynthia Lee, Taisha Paggett, Jose L. Reynoso, Christine Suarez and Ally Voye. Previous to her studies at UCLA, Rebecca studied choreography with Ellen Robbins, Merce Cunningham, William Seigh, Pedro Alejandro, Susan Lourie and Martha Myers. She has had her work produced in a variety of festivals and venues in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco including Deli Dances at Times Square, the New Dance Groupe Arts Center, the Evolving Arts Theater, estrogenius at Manhattan Theatre Source, University Settlement, Access Theater, Anatomy Riot at Zen Sushi, Under the Radar at High Energy Constructs, Studio at REDCAT and STREAM/fest at CounterPULSE. She is a recent recipient of a Silo Residency from DanceNOW/NYC.
Rebecca has danced for Stephan Koplowitz, Yvonne Rainer, Denise Uyehara, Taisha Paggett, Carol McDowell, Cid Pearlman and Ana Maria Alvarez. Rebecca's writing has appeared in Hanging Loose Magazine, Shooting the Rat from Hanging Loose Press, The Big Apple Parent, The United States Naval Institute Magazine and ITCH. Rebecca has also curated exhibits and concerts of other artists including Survival Drawings: the last works of Sheila Alson, Dance Under Construction VII: In/corp/orations Choreographic Works and Anatomy Riot 10. Rebecca has a small massage therapy practice in LA. She is in a training program to teach Klein/Mahler technique. Her bodywork, dancing and choreography are deeply influenced by her continuing studies with Barbara Mahler. |  |
